Lot 1274
1878. 8 Tail Feathers. VAM-9 First Die Marriage. Top-100. NGC graded AU-53. Vary rare die variety. Evenly worn. Pop 4; 11 finer, 3 in 55, 2 in 58, 1 in 61, 2 in 62, 1 in 63, 1 in 64, 1 in 64 Star. (PCGS # 7072) .

According to researchers at VAMworld, "The 1878 VAM-9 Morgan Silver Dollar is the very first set of dies used to strike Morgan dollars! The 1878 VAM-9 is an 8 tailfeather coin with the A1h reverse. Detective work has revealed they began striking the new Morgan coins at 3:17 PM on March 11, 1878. The combination of the die and the time is known because a reporter was present at the event and the first coins struck were presentation pieces for President Hayes. His specific coin has been preserved and studied for die features and subsequently identified as a VAM-9. According to a reporter present, only 303 pieces were struck when the die failed and new ones had to be used. The reverse die is identifiable because of the "comma" feather on the lower right side as looking at the eagle. Some VAmmers describe this feather as kidney-bean shaped and it is a key identifier of a VAM-9.".
Estimated Value $1,300 - 1,400.

Note: Beginning with 1879, the Mint made Morgan Silver Dollars with two different reverses. The first, called "Reverse of 1878 or "Second Reverse"" was a holdover from the previous year and shows a flat-breasted eagle and a flat feather on the top fletch of the arrows as on this lovely Gem 1878 specimen. The second, called "Reverse of 1879" or "Third Reverse" has an eagle with a nice, rounded breast and a slanted feather on the top fletch of the arrows.

1879-CC. MS-60 with semi reflective fields. In the GSA black holder. The CC mint mark is very clear and not capped. Rare in this format. Although the 1880-CC, 1881-CC and 1885-CC all have lower mintages, the 1879-CC is the rarest CC-mint Morgan Dollar struck from 1878 to 1885. This fact notwithstanding, market offerings for examples that grade up to and including MS64 are anything but rare due to long-held Treasury distributions in the 1970s. Only 4,100 were in the GSA sale, a mere 0.54% of the originial mintage.

The GSA story: In the mid 1960's, the government was winding down the exchange of silver certificates for silver dollars. After the program was terminated in 1964, the government had a large supply of original mint sealed bags of silver dollars. The hoard was dubbed the GSA (Government Services Administration) Hoard; they were named this because this was the branch of the government that was in charge of the dispersal of these coins. The hoard included over 3 million coins, most of which were minted in Carson City Nevada. Until the discovery of this hoard, CC dollars were thought to be relatively scarce in high grade. The hoard consisted of mostly CC dollars but approximately 125,000 coins were discovered to be from other mints. These coins ranged in condition from heavily circulated to uncirculated. The uncirculated non CC GSA coins come in a plastic holder that labels them as "United States Silver Dollars" instead of the standard "Carson City Silver Dollar" and can also be found in the soft packs as well. The GSA hoard contained up to 84% of the entire mintage of some CC dollars. 1879-CC was not one of these common dates.
Estimated Value $6,500 - 7,000.

1879. PCGS graded Proof 64+ Cameo. A fully white cameo proof with a hint of gold tone around the edges. While 1,100 Proof Morgans were officially recorded as having been struck, Breen believes that the Mint only produced 750 pieces and then melted 100 of those in 1880. Regardless the true figures, this is an originally delicately toned near-Gem that is replete with mirror sparkle and depth. The devices give cameo accents in a typical (and commendable) two-tone appearance of well made Morgan Silver Dollars struck in the first few years. Pop 4; 25 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 87314) .

Lot 1321
1884-CC. GSA Hoard. NGC graded MS-67. Frosty white coin. The finest we have seen in a GSA holder. Of the various date Carson City Morgan dollars that were warehoused for close to a century between the Nevada Mint and the Treasury, the 1883-CC and 1884-CC issues were by far the most common and remain so today in grades up to MS65. Anything finer than this is elusive. The present piece, for example, in the superb MS67 grade, is one of just 25 that NGC has certified, with none finer.

Prior to the 1930s, this date was a prime rarity, since knowledge of the Treasury hoard was unknown to most collectors. The low mintage of slightly more than 1 million coins tended to confirm this rarity. Yet 962,638 pieces, or 84.7% of the original mintage, were still in the hands of the Treasury Department after March 1964, when a halt was called to the great Treasury release that began in October 1962.

A scintillating brilliant piece, the frosty and beaming white surfaces have luster of inestimable perfect quality. The few light contacts on either side are almost entirely within the devices, and require a magnifier to see. Pop 25; 3 finer, 2 in 67 Star, 1 in 67+ Star.
Estimated Value $14,000 - 15,000.
